Parampara is an original Sambalpuri cotton saree woven in mercerized cotton, set entirely in maroon, with jala-technique checks across the full body, a Rudraksha-motif border, and flower motifs across the pallu — an authentic Sambalpuri handloom saree that carries the measured clarity of the Bandha tradition.
The Craft Behind Parampara
Parampara is woven by Bhulia weavers of Odisha using the Bandha technique — a double ikat process known as Bandhakala, in which both warp and weft threads are resist-dyed individually through careful tying before a single pass of weaving begins. Because the dyeing happens before the threads meet the loom, every motif emerges simultaneously on both axes at the moment of weaving — not printed, not applied. The Rudraksha border and flower pallu motifs are aligned thread by thread. A GI certified Sambalpuri saree of this construction takes 10 to 15 days on the handloom. The jala technique layered across the body adds a further dimension: supplementary thread work that forms checks over the full field of the saree, structured entirely within the weave itself.
Wearing Parampara
Mercerized cotton carries a quiet weight — firm enough to hold a clean pleat, light enough to move through a full day without fatigue. The 120-count warp and weft give the surface a mild sheen without departing from the character of handloom cotton. The all-maroon palette makes Parampara a considered choice as a Sambalpuri saree for wedding functions, where depth of colour reads well in both daylight and artificial light. The Rudraksha border carries a devotional resonance that suits it equally as a Sambalpuri saree for puja. The structured drape and measured weight also make it a practical Sambalpuri cotton saree for office wear, where the jala-check body holds its form across long hours.
Parampara is part of the Pasapali collection of handloom Sambalpuri sarees sourced directly from Bhulia weavers of Odisha.
