Anasuya is an original Sambalpuri cotton saree woven in Apricot Beige and Blue, part of the authentic Sambalpuri handloom tradition. Triangular clusters of Leaf butas cover the body, while Rudraksha motifs mark the border and Phula motifs fill the pallu with quiet, considered detail.
The Craft Behind Anasuya
Anasuya is the result of the Bandhakala process — the Bandha double ikat technique practised by Bhulia weavers in Odisha. Before a single thread meets the loom, warp and weft yarns are bound and resist-dyed in precise sequence so that motifs emerge simultaneously from both directions at the moment of weaving. Matching those resist-dyed points demands accuracy at every pass of the shuttle. For a GI certified Sambalpuri saree woven in mercerized cotton at a thread count of 120 warp and 120 weft, the loom holds the cloth for 10 to 15 days. The Rudraksha border, Phula pallu, and triangular Leaf butas across the body are not printed or embroidered — they are locked into the structure of the weave itself.
Wearing Anasuya
Mercerized cotton carries a faint natural sheen and holds its form across a long day without pulling or stiffening. The hand of this cloth is smooth and the weight is balanced — enough to drape cleanly, light enough to move without effort. As a Sambalpuri saree for wedding ceremonies, Anasuya reads with quiet presence; the Rudraksha motif carries an auspicious association that suits the occasion. As a Sambalpuri saree for puja, the Apricot Beige ground and Phula pallu hold the right restraint. For anyone wearing a Sambalpuri cotton saree for office, the structure of the triangular buta arrangement keeps the body of the saree composed through hours of wear. The Blue secondary colour appears at border and pallu, grounding the Apricot Beige without overpowering it.
Anasuya is part of the Pasapali collection of handloom Sambalpuri sarees, each woven to the standards of the Government of India Handloom Mark.
