Akshaya is a handloom Sambalpuri cotton saree woven in deep blue and red, part of the original Sambalpuri cotton saree tradition carried forward by Pasapali. Flower chakra and jhoti motifs travel across the body, anchored by a fish motif border and a pallu rich with lotus and traditional Sambalpuri flower patterns.

The Craft Behind Akshaya

Akshaya is produced through the Bandha technique — a double ikat process known in Odisha as Bandhakala. Before a single thread is placed on the loom, both warp and weft yarns are resist-dyed by hand, binding specific sections with tight ties so dye penetrates only where the motif demands. When weaving begins, the pre-dyed threads align to form the flower chakra, jhoti, fish, and lotus motifs with precision across the entire length of the cloth. This is the defining mark of an authentic Sambalpuri handloom saree. Akshaya is woven by Bhulia weavers of Odisha over 10 to 15 days on a traditional pit loom, and carries the GI certified Sambalpuri saree mark alongside the Government of India Handloom Mark.

Wearing Akshaya

Mercerized cotton gives Akshaya a firm, slightly luminous hand that softens with each wash. The fabric holds its drape without heaviness, making it comfortable across long hours. The blue body and red contrast read clearly in daylight and warm indoor light alike. As a Sambalpuri saree for wedding occasions, the structured pallu with lotus motifs frames the shoulder with quiet authority. For a Sambalpuri saree for puja, the jhoti and flower chakra motifs carry cultural weight that feels appropriate and considered. As a Sambalpuri cotton saree for office wear, the measured geometry of the fish border and body motifs reads as composed and deliberate. The wearer carries a living record of Odishan craft with every fold.

Akshaya is part of the Pasapali collection of handloom Sambalpuri sarees, sourced directly from Bhulia weaver communities in Odisha.
