The Craft Behind Parampara

Parampara is woven by Bhulia weavers of Odisha using the Bandha technique — a double ikat process known as Bandhakala, in which both warp and weft threads are resist-dyed individually through careful tying before a single pass of weaving begins. Because the dyeing happens before the threads meet the loom, every motif emerges simultaneously on both axes at the moment of weaving — not printed, not applied. The Rudraksha border and flower pallu motifs are aligned thread by thread. A GI certified Sambalpuri saree of this construction takes 10 to 15 days on the handloom. The jala technique layered across the body adds a further dimension: supplementary thread work that forms checks over the full field of the saree, structured entirely within the weave itself.
