Pink runs through the body with phula buta and diamond butas, anchored by a Rudraksha motif border in blue and red, and a pallu carrying ikat flower motifs.

The Craft Behind Damayanti

Damayanti is woven by Bhulia weavers of Odisha using the Bandha technique — a double ikat process known as Bandhakala in which both warp and weft threads are individually resist-dyed before a single pass of weaving begins. Each thread bundle is measured, tied, and dyed in precise sequence so that the motifs — the Rudraksha forms on the border, the phula butas across the body — emerge in alignment only when warp meets weft on the loom. There is no correcting placement after weaving starts. A GI certified Sambalpuri saree of this count requires 10 to 15 days on the loom for cotton, and the thread count of 120 warp by 120 weft ensures the surface holds both clarity of motif and softness of hand. This is authentic Sambalpuri handloom work with no mechanical assist in the ikat dyeing.
