The Craft Behind Chitralekha

Chitralekha is the result of the Bandhakala process — the double ikat method at the heart of the Sambalpuri Bandha tradition. Before a single thread passes through the loom, master weavers from the Bhulia community in Odisha bind sections of both warp and weft threads with resist ties, then dye them in sequence. When the ties are removed, a precise colour map has been set into each thread. As weaving begins, the tribal body motifs, the Rudraksha border, and the Phula pallu emerge simultaneously on both axes — a feat of spatial calculation that defines GI certified Sambalpuri saree work. On mercerized cotton, this process demands 10 to 15 days on the loom, and the handloom Sambalpuri saree that results carries a motif alignment that cannot be replicated by machine.
