Chitralekha is an original Sambalpuri cotton saree woven in deep purple and black mercerized cotton, part of the authentic Sambalpuri handloom tradition carried forward by Pasapali. The body carries tribal motifs, the border is set with the sacred Rudraksha pattern, and the pallu blooms with the Phula motif — each element placed with deliberate intent across warp and weft.
The Craft Behind Chitralekha
Chitralekha is the result of the Bandhakala process — the double ikat method at the heart of the Sambalpuri Bandha tradition. Before a single thread passes through the loom, master weavers from the Bhulia community in Odisha bind sections of both warp and weft threads with resist ties, then dye them in sequence. When the ties are removed, a precise colour map has been set into each thread. As weaving begins, the tribal body motifs, the Rudraksha border, and the Phula pallu emerge simultaneously on both axes — a feat of spatial calculation that defines GI certified Sambalpuri saree work. On mercerized cotton, this process demands 10 to 15 days on the loom, and the handloom Sambalpuri saree that results carries a motif alignment that cannot be replicated by machine.
Wearing Chitralekha
Mercerized cotton gives Chitralekha a smooth surface and a quiet sheen that deepens the purple without making the fabric heavy. The drape is composed — neither too stiff nor too fluid — which means it holds a pleat cleanly and moves with the wearer through a full day. The tribal body motifs sit close to the weave, giving the fabric texture you feel as much as see. As a Sambalpuri saree for wedding occasions, the Rudraksha border and Phula pallu carry the ritual weight the setting calls for. As a Sambalpuri saree for puja, the motifs connect to a long Odishan devotional sensibility. As a Sambalpuri cotton saree for office, the mercerized finish and controlled colour palette work equally well in formal surroundings.
