The Craft Behind Barshika

Barshika is the work of Bhulia weavers, Odisha, who practise the Bandha technique — a form of double ikat in which both warp and weft threads are tied and resist-dyed in precise sequence before a single shuttle crosses the loom. Because the colour is locked into the thread before weaving begins, the peacock, flower, and Rudraksha motifs must align perfectly across two independent sets of dyed threads — a calculation made entirely by hand. This Bandhakala process takes 10 to 15 days for a single cotton length. Barshika carries the GI certified Sambalpuri saree mark and the Government of India Handloom Mark, confirming its origin and craft integrity within the authentic Sambalpuri handloom tradition.
