Description
Sharada is an original Sambalpuri cotton saree woven in pink mercerized cotton, carrying one of the oldest sachipar check patterns in the handloom Sambalpuri saree tradition. Its black khajur border, ikat-aligned body checks, and a pallu filled with phula lata, bird, and flower motifs make it a considered choice for those who value craft over decoration.
The Craft Behind Sharada
Sharada is the work of Bhulia weavers in Odisha, who practise the Bandhakala process — a resist-dyeing method in which both warp and weft threads are individually tied and dyed before a single pass of the shuttle begins. This is Bandha, the double ikat technique: motifs are not printed or embroidered but emerge simultaneously from both thread directions as the weaver works. Every motif alignment across warp and weft requires precise pre-calculation. On mercerized cotton, this process takes 10 to 15 days on the loom. Sharada carries the GI certified Sambalpuri saree mark and the Government of India Handloom Mark, confirming its origin and authenticity as an authentic Sambalpuri handloom saree.
Wearing Sharada
Mercerized cotton sits closer to the body than silk, draping with a slight weight that holds its pleats without stiffness. The sachipar check across the body creates a quiet visual rhythm, while the black chevron border gives structure at the hem. This is a Sambalpuri saree for wedding rituals where tradition matters more than occasion dressing, and equally suited as a Sambalpuri saree for puja, where the phula lata and bird motifs on the pallu carry their own meaning. The breathable cotton weave also makes Sharada a practical Sambalpuri cotton saree for office wear through longer working days. The motifs do not overwhelm the wearer — they accompany her.
Sharada is part of the Pasapali collection of ikat saree Odisha weaves, each sourced directly from Bhulia weaver families practising the Bandhakala technique across Sambalpur.
