Description

Shailabala is an original Sambalpuri cotton saree woven in mercerized cotton, presenting a solid pink body that carries the weight of the Bandhakala process through its ek phulia and kathiphera border and a traditional Phula motif across the pallu — an authentic Sambalpuri handloom saree in every thread.

The Craft Behind Shailabala

Shailabala is made through the Bandha technique, a double ikat process practised by Bhulia weavers of Odisha across generations. Before a single thread meets the loom, both warp and weft yarns are carefully bound and resist-dyed in sequence, so that each motif emerges simultaneously from both directions as weaving progresses. This Bandhakala process demands precise calculation — any misalignment in the tying stage is irreversible once dyeing begins. On mercerized cotton, the Bhulia weavers of Odisha spend 10 to 15 days on the loom per saree, building the ek phulia border, the kathiphera edge, and the Phula motif row by row. Shailabala carries the GI certified Sambalpuri saree mark, confirming its provenance and craft integrity.

Wearing Shailabala

Mercerized cotton gives Shailabala a faint natural sheen without the weight of silk, making it manageable across a full day of wear. The fabric moves cleanly, holds the drape well, and breathes in warm weather. The solid pink body keeps the eye travelling toward the border and pallu, where the ek phulia motifs and Phula pattern sit in quiet contrast. As a Sambalpuri saree for wedding occasions, the pink and blue palette reads festive without being loud. It works equally well as a Sambalpuri saree for puja, where the traditional Phula motif carries cultural resonance. For daily wear, this Sambalpuri cotton saree for office holds its form through hours of movement without losing its drape. The kathiphera border frames the wearer's silhouette with restrained definition.

Shailabala is part of the Pasapali collection of handloom Sambalpuri sarees, each documented by weaver and loom.
