Sandhya is a Kotpad handloom saree woven in rust, off-white, and brown — an original Kotpad saree online from Pasapali, carrying tribal motifs of the macha (fish) and pharsa (axe) across a handspun cotton body with an earthy, grounded drape.

The Craft Behind Sandhya

Sandhya is rooted in the aal bark dyeing tradition of Kotpad, Odisha. The bark of the aal tree (Morinda citrifolia) is collected, boiled slowly, and the cotton fibres are soaked in the prepared bath over repeated immersions. Colour is fixed entirely through natural mordants — no synthetic chemicals are used at any stage. This process is what produces the signature rust and brown tones distinctive to the GI certified Kotpad textile. The Mirgan tribal weavers of Odisha have maintained this vegetable dye tradition for generations, working with handspun cotton on pit looms to produce cloth that is both tactile and enduring. Each piece carries the Government of India Handloom Mark, confirming authenticity and handmade origin.
