Description

Rohini is an original Sambalpuri cotton saree woven in mercerized cotton, part of the authentic Sambalpuri handloom tradition, presenting deep red body scattered with tiny buta across the field, anchored by a plain solid black border and a phula ikat pallu that draws the eye with composed precision.

The Craft Behind Rohini

Rohini is woven using the Bandha technique — a double ikat process known in Odisha as Bandhakala. Before a single thread meets the loom, both warp and weft threads are individually resist-dyed by hand: each section is bound tightly, dyed in sequence, unbound, and realigned so that motifs emerge simultaneously on both thread directions once weaving begins. This demands exact calculation at every stage. Bhulia weavers of Odisha carry this knowledge across generations. A Rohini saree in mercerized cotton takes 10 to 15 days on the handloom. Every piece carries the GI certified Sambalpuri saree mark and the Government of India Handloom Mark as confirmation of origin and method.

Wearing Rohini

Mercerized cotton gives Rohini a quiet sheen without weight — the fabric moves with the body rather than against it. At 5.40 metres with a 43-inch breadth, the saree drapes cleanly in Nivi or Bengali style and holds its form through a full day. The ek phulia and kathiphera border detailing along the selvedge frames the deep red field without interruption. As a Sambalpuri saree for wedding settings, the phula ikat pallu speaks without ornament. As a Sambalpuri saree for puja, the traditional buta and border carry appropriate reverence. Worn as a Sambalpuri cotton saree for office, the structure and colour hold through long hours with ease. Rohini places craft directly on the wearer.

Rohini is part of the Pasapali handloom Sambalpuri cotton saree collection, rooted in the Bhulia weaving tradition of Odisha.
