Pushpaja is an original Sambalpuri cotton saree woven in mercerized cotton, presenting a white ground scattered with Phula motifs and geometric ikat patterns — a handloom Sambalpuri saree that carries the discipline of the Bandhakala process in every thread.
The Craft Behind Pushpaja
Pushpaja is woven by Bhulia weavers of Odisha using the Bandha technique — a double ikat process in which both warp and weft threads are individually resist-dyed and bound before a single pass of the shuttle. This pre-loom dyeing, known as the Bandhakala process, demands that every motif — the Rudraksha border, the Phula body patterns, the floral ikat of the blue pallu — be calculated and tied by hand so that warp and weft align exactly at the moment of interlacing. A single GI certified Sambalpuri saree in cotton requires 10 to 15 days on the loom. The GI Tag for Sambalpuri Handloom and the Government of India Handloom Mark together confirm the origin and process of this authentic Sambalpuri handloom saree.
Wearing Pushpaja
Mercerized cotton gives Pushpaja a gentle sheen without weight, and the 120-count warp and weft threads produce a surface that is close-woven yet breathable. The saree drapes with a quiet, even fall — neither stiff nor limp — and the white ground keeps the blue motifs and border visible in different lights. As a Sambalpuri saree for wedding occasions, the Rudraksha border and floral pallu read with cultural intention. As a Sambalpuri saree for puja, the Phula motifs and the measured geometry of the body carry appropriate devotional resonance. As a Sambalpuri cotton saree for office wear, the weight and structure of the mercerized cotton hold a pleat and maintain composure through the day. At 5.40 metres with a blouse piece, Pushpaja accommodates standard draping styles without adjustment.
Pushpaja is part of the Pasapali collection of ikat sarees from Odisha, where each Sambalpuri Bandha saree is sourced directly from the Bhulia weaving community.
