Madhavi is a Sambalpuri cotton saree and an original Sambalpuri handloom saree woven in mercerized cotton, presenting warm brown and maroon tones across a body filled with Phula Lata motifs, a Rudraksha border, and a pallu dense with flower and creeper patterning.

The Craft Behind Madhavi

Madhavi is produced through the Bandhakala process — the Bandha double ikat technique practised by Bhulia weavers of Odisha. Before a single thread meets the loom, both warp and weft threads are resist-tied and dyed independently, so that each motif is mapped into the thread itself. When weaving begins, the patterns on warp and weft must align with precision — a miscalculation by even a few threads shifts the entire motif. At 120 warp ends and 120 weft ends per inch, the cloth demands 10 to 15 days on the loom for a cotton saree of this count. Madhavi carries the GI certified Sambalpuri saree mark, confirming it as an authentic Sambalpuri handloom produced under the registered geographical indication for Sambalpuri Handloom.

Wearing Madhavi

Mercerized cotton gives Madhavi a quiet sheen without adding weight. The hand is smooth, the drape settles cleanly at the shoulder, and the fall holds its line through the day without clinging. As a Sambalpuri saree for wedding occasions, the Rudraksha border and Phula Lata body carry visual weight that reads well in ceremony. As a Sambalpuri saree for puja, the earthy brown grounds the wearer without competing with ritual colour. As a Sambalpuri cotton saree for office, the breathable mercerized cotton and structured drape make it a practical daily choice. The Plula flower and lata motifs on the pallu fall naturally when the saree is draped, placing the most intricate portion of the weave at the most visible point of the silhouette.

Madhavi is part of the handloom Sambalpuri saree range at Pasapali, where each piece is sourced directly from Bhulia weavers and carries the Government of India Handloom Mark.
