Description

Kusumavali is an original Sambalpuri cotton saree woven in mercerized cotton, presenting a quiet off-white body accented with blue ek phulia and kathiphera borders that frame each edge with measured precision. This handloom Sambalpuri saree draws its name from a floral sensibility — kusuma meaning flower — carried through the traditional phula motifs that bloom across the pallu.

The Craft Behind Kusumavali

Kusumavali is produced using Bandha, the double ikat technique rooted in the Bandhakala process of Odisha. Before a single thread passes through the loom, warp and weft yarns are separately bound and resist-dyed so that motifs are encoded into each thread. When weaving begins, the Bhulia weavers of Odisha align these pre-dyed threads with careful hand and eye so that the phula motifs emerge simultaneously on both axes — a convergence that cannot be corrected after the fact. On mercerized cotton, this process takes 10 to 15 days per saree. Each piece carries the GI certified Sambalpuri saree mark and the Government of India Handloom Mark, confirming its origin and craft integrity.

Wearing Kusumavali

Mercerized cotton gives Kusumavali a weight that is settled without being heavy. The thread count of 120 warp by 120 weft produces a surface that is smooth to the hand and holds its drape through a full day of wear without slackening. The off-white body keeps the saree open and unhurried in feel. It sits well as a Sambalpuri cotton saree for office, where the restrained border and clean body read as composed rather than ornate. The phula pallu lends it enough presence for a Sambalpuri saree for puja, and the blue-and-off-white colour pairing gives it the quiet formality suited to a Sambalpuri saree for wedding attendance — for the wearer who prefers considered over conspicuous.

Kusumavali is part of the Pasapali collection of authentic Sambalpuri handloom sarees, documenting the Bhulia weaving tradition of Odisha.
