Kumudini is an original Sambalpuri cotton saree woven in mercerized cotton, presenting sky blue and navy blue in a handloom Sambalpuri saree composition of Plula Lata across the body, fish motif along the border, and Plula with shankha motif on the pallu. The mercerized cotton carries colour with clarity, and the contrast between the two blues holds its depth through the weave itself.
The Craft Behind Kumudini
Kumudini is produced through the Bandha technique — a double ikat process known as Bandhakala — practised by Bhulia weavers of Odisha. In this method, both warp and weft threads are individually resist-dyed by tying them in precise patterns before a single pass of weaving begins. When the threads finally meet on the loom, the motifs emerge simultaneously from both directions, aligning without the use of any guide print or stencil. This alignment is achieved entirely through the weaver's knowledge of thread count and dye placement. Each Kumudini takes 10 to 15 days on the loom. As an authentic Sambalpuri handloom saree carrying the GI certified Sambalpuri saree mark, every piece from Pasapali is also certified under the Government of India Handloom Mark.
Wearing Kumudini
Mercerized cotton carries a faint sheen without added weight, and Kumudini drapes with a clean fall that holds its pleats through a full day of wear. The fabric breathes well, making it a considered choice as a Sambalpuri cotton saree for office — structured enough for formal settings, comfortable across long hours. The Plula and shankha motifs on the pallu give it a ritual presence that suits a Sambalpuri saree for puja, where the motifs carry their own symbolic weight. For a Sambalpuri saree for wedding, the fish-motif border grounds the sky blue field with a traditional Odishan register that reads with quiet authority. The Plula Lata on the body moves with the drape rather than against it, so the wearer carries the pattern rather than being framed by it.
Kumudini is part of the Pasapali range of handloom Sambalpuri sarees, woven to document and sustain the Bandhakala tradition of Odisha.
