Description
Indumati is an original Sambalpuri cotton saree woven in mercerized cotton, offered as an authentic Sambalpuri handloom saree in a composed off-white ground with black Bandha borders and a phula-motif pallu that carries the quiet weight of Odishan craft tradition.
The Craft Behind Indumati
Indumati is woven using the Bandha technique — a double ikat process in which both warp and weft threads are resist-dyed before a single pass of the shuttle. Bhulia weavers in Odisha bind sections of thread with tight ties, dye them in precise sequence, then align them on the loom so motifs emerge simultaneously across both thread directions. This is the Bandhakala process: unhurried, calculated, and irreversible. Each Indumati saree takes 10 to 15 days on the handloom. Pasapali carries the GI certified Sambalpuri saree certification and the Government of India Handloom Mark, confirming the origin and method of every piece in this collection.
Wearing Indumati
Mercerized cotton carries a light, settled weight that drapes close without stiffness. Indumati moves with the body rather than against it — the off-white ground breathes through long hours, while the ek phulia and kathiphera borders keep each pleat defined. As a Sambalpuri saree for wedding gatherings, the phula pallu reads clearly across a room without ornamentation for its own sake. As a Sambalpuri saree for puja, the off-white ground and the black restraint of the Bandha border carry appropriate intention. As a Sambalpuri cotton saree for office, the structured weave holds its form through the day. The motifs, aligned across warp and weft by Bhulia hands, sit at the borders and pallu — precise in placement, unhurried in expression.
Indumati is part of the Pasapali handloom Sambalpuri saree collection, where each piece is sourced directly from Bhulia weaving communities in Odisha.
