The Craft Behind Indulekha

Indulekha is woven through the Bandhakala process — the Bandha double ikat technique practiced by Bhulia weavers of Odisha. Before a single thread is placed on the loom, both warp and weft threads are hand-tied in precise sequence, then resist-dyed so that each section absorbs colour only where intended. When the threads are finally woven together, the geometric flower motifs and Rudraksha border emerge simultaneously on both axes, locking into alignment across the entire cloth. This synchronised resist-dyeing across warp and weft is what separates a GI certified Sambalpuri saree from any printed or embroidered imitation. A single Indulekha takes 10 to 15 days on the loom.
