Description

Indrani is an original Sambalpuri cotton saree woven in the Sachipar tradition, presenting a white and red palette shaped by the handloom Sambalpuri saree craft of Odisha. The Sachipar check body, dasphulia border, and a pallu carrying flower, fish, duck, deer, and elephant motifs come together in mercerized cotton that drapes with understated clarity.

The Craft Behind Indrani

Indrani is made using the Bandha technique — a double ikat process rooted in Odishan weaving called Bandhakala. Before a single thread meets the loom, both warp and weft yarns are bound and resist-dyed in precise sections. When weaving begins, the pre-dyed threads align to form motifs simultaneously in both directions. This demands exact calculation: any misalignment breaks the pattern. Bhulia weavers of Odisha carry this knowledge through generations, spending 10 to 15 days on the loom for a single GI certified Sambalpuri saree. The Handloom Mark issued by the Government of India confirms each piece as an authentic Sambalpuri handloom saree, woven by hand and not reproduced by machine.

Wearing Indrani

Mercerized cotton carries a quiet sheen without weight. Indrani drapes smoothly, holds its pleats through a long day, and allows air to move — making it a considered choice as a Sambalpuri cotton saree for office, where the Sachipar check reads as composed and deliberate. At ritual occasions, the red dasphulia border and elephant-and-deer pallu motifs connect to a visual language long associated with the Sambalpuri saree for puja. For a Sambalpuri saree for wedding, the white ground with traditional ikat figures worn in the pallu carries a ceremonial weight that comes from the cloth itself, not from embellishment. Thread count at warp 120 and weft 120 produces a firm yet fluid hand.

Indrani is offered by Pasapali as part of its ongoing documentation of the Bandha saree Odisha tradition — handloom Sambalpuri saree craft preserved in thread and time.
