Description

Hemavati is an original Sambalpuri cotton saree woven in mercerized cotton, presenting a soft pink field scattered with small flower butas across the body, a paan patri–patterned border in blue and maroon, and a phula motif pallu — a handloom Sambalpuri saree that carries its colour and geometry with quiet clarity.

The Craft Behind Hemavati

Hemavati is made using the Bandha double ikat technique, known in Odisha as Bandhakala. Before a single thread is placed on the loom, both warp and weft yarns are resist-bound and dyed in precise sequence so that each phula and buta motif emerges simultaneously from both thread directions at the moment of weaving. This alignment demands exacting preparation — any miscalculation in the binding shifts the motif. Bhulia weavers of Odisha carry this knowledge across generations. Hemavati takes between ten and fifteen days on the handloom. It is covered under the GI certified Sambalpuri saree designation and carries the Government of India Handloom Mark.

Wearing Hemavati

Mercerized cotton gives Hemavati a subtle sheen without weight. The fabric moves easily in drape, settles without stiffness, and breathes well across long hours of wear. The pink ground keeps the saree light in presence; the maroon and blue border grounds it without overpowering. As a Sambalpuri saree for wedding occasions, the phula pallu reads well in ceremony. As a Sambalpuri saree for puja, the flower buta body and measured palette carry appropriate restraint. As a Sambalpuri cotton saree for office wear, the mercerized finish and structured border offer the right proportion of formality. The motifs, aligned across warp and weft, remain coherent in movement as in stillness.

Hemavati is part of the Pasapali range of authentic Sambalpuri handloom sarees, each woven by Bhulia weavers in Odisha and certified under the GI tag for Sambalpuri Handloom.
