Description

Bimala is an original Sambalpuri cotton saree woven in deep blue mercerized cotton, carrying ikat kathiphera borders and a pallu rich with duck motifs, tribal figures, dhaan patri, and tree imagery — an authentic Sambalpuri handloom saree shaped by Odisha's oldest resist-dye tradition.

The Craft Behind Bimala

Bimala is woven through the Bandhakala process — a discipline in which warp and weft threads are individually resist-dyed and tied before a single pass of the shuttle begins. This is Bandha, the double ikat technique: motifs are mapped and bound on both thread sets so that when weaving commences on the handloom, the pattern emerges from alignment alone, not from surface printing or embroidery. Bhulia weavers in Odisha — the community that has held this knowledge across generations — spend 10 to 15 days on the loom for a single cotton saree. Each duck, tribal figure, and dhaan patri in Bimala's pallu is the outcome of that thread-level precision. Bimala carries the GI certified Sambalpuri saree mark and the Government of India Handloom Mark, confirming its origin and craft integrity.

Wearing Bimala

Mercerized cotton at a thread count of 120 warp by 120 weft produces a fabric that is firm to the touch yet settles into a clean drape as it warms to the body. Bimala moves without stiffness and holds its pleats steadily through a long day. The solid blue body keeps the eye on the border and pallu, where the ikat kathiphera line frames every fold. As a Sambalpuri saree for wedding occasions, Bimala carries cultural weight without requiring embellishment. As a Sambalpuri saree for puja, its measured palette and tribal motifs speak to Odishan ritual sensibility. As a Sambalpuri cotton saree for office, it is composed and unhurried — a saree that signals craft awareness without demanding attention.

Bimala is part of the Pasapali collection of handloom Sambalpuri sarees, woven in authentic Sambalpuri handloom tradition by Bhulia weavers of Odisha.
