Description

Basundhara is an original Sambalpuri cotton saree woven in mercerized cotton, presenting a handloom Sambalpuri saree in warm light brown with black accents, a structured check body, and a pallu filled with flower motifs, bird figures, and phula lata rendered through the Bandha double ikat process.

The Craft Behind Basundhara

Basundhara is produced through Bandhakala — the Bandha double ikat technique practised by Bhulia weavers of Odisha, in which both warp and weft threads are individually resist-dyed and bound before they ever meet the loom. Because the pattern is locked into each set of threads separately, the motifs — kumbha, fish, phula lata, bird forms — must align precisely when the threads finally interlace during weaving. A single miscalculation displaces the image across the entire cloth. On mercerized cotton, this process takes 10 to 15 days on the loom. The result is an authentic Sambalpuri handloom saree and a GI certified Sambalpuri saree produced under the Sambalpuri Handloom geographical indication.

Wearing Basundhara

Mercerized cotton carries a quiet sheen without weight, and Basundhara drapes with a clean fall that holds a pleat firmly without stiffening against the body. The check body gives the cloth a subtle visual rhythm throughout the length, while the Pasapali border with kumbha and fish motifs frames the drape with defined lines. As a Sambalpuri saree for wedding occasions, Basundhara reads through its composed earth tones rather than decoration. As a Sambalpuri saree for puja, the bird and floral pallu carries symbolic resonance rooted in Odishan craft tradition. As a Sambalpuri cotton saree for office, the light brown ground and structured check body make it easy to wear across a full day. The Government of India Handloom Mark accompanies each piece from Pasapali.

Basundhara is part of Pasapali's commitment to handloom Sambalpuri sarees woven by Bhulia craftspeople — offering Sambalpuri cotton sarees to buy online across India with documented origin.
