The Craft Behind Anasuya

Anasuya is the result of the Bandhakala process — the Bandha double ikat technique practised by Bhulia weavers in Odisha. Before a single thread meets the loom, warp and weft yarns are bound and resist-dyed in precise sequence so that motifs emerge simultaneously from both directions at the moment of weaving. Matching those resist-dyed points demands accuracy at every pass of the shuttle. For a GI certified Sambalpuri saree woven in mercerized cotton at a thread count of 120 warp and 120 weft, the loom holds the cloth for 10 to 15 days. The Rudraksha border, Phula pallu, and triangular Leaf butas across the body are not printed or embroidered — they are locked into the structure of the weave itself.
