Description

Rajani is an original Sambalpuri cotton saree woven in deep blue and black, carrying the ikat saree Odisha tradition through its leaf-patra body, rudraksha border, and a pallu rich with bird, jhoti, and phula motifs drawn directly from Odishan folk iconography. The mercerized cotton gives the weave a calm, grounded finish.

The Craft Behind Rajani

Rajani is produced through the Bandha double ikat process — one of the most labour-intensive resist-dyeing traditions in Indian handloom. Before a single thread meets the loom, both warp and weft yarns are bound and dyed in precise sequence by Bhulia weavers of Odisha, so that every motif — the rudraksha border, the patra body, the bird and phula of the pallu — emerges simultaneously from both directions as weaving progresses. This Bandhakala technique demands exact alignment; any drift disrupts the pattern entirely. On mercerized cotton, the process takes 10 to 15 days per saree. Rajani carries the GI certified Sambalpuri saree mark, confirming its provenance under the Sambalpuri Handloom GI tag and the Government of India Handloom Mark.

Wearing Rajani

Mercerized cotton at a thread count of 120 warp by 120 weft sits close to the body without stiffness. Rajani drapes with a quiet weight — enough to hold a pleat cleanly, light enough for hours of wear. The blue and black palette reads as composed and considered, suited to a Sambalpuri saree for wedding gatherings where the motifs carry their own presence without competing with heavy jewellery. The rudraksha border holds its line in movement, making it equally appropriate as a Sambalpuri saree for puja, where the motif itself carries devotional meaning. The structured drape and breathable mercerized cotton make Rajani a practical Sambalpuri cotton saree for office wear through long working days. The bird and jhoti motifs on the pallu fall at the shoulder — visible, deliberate, speaking to the wearer's knowledge of craft.

Rajani is part of the Pasapali collection of authentic Sambalpuri handloom sarees, each woven by Bhulia artisans in Odisha.
