The Craft Behind Pramodini

Pramodini is made using the Bandha technique — the authentic double ikat process, locally known as Bandhakala, practised by Bhulia weavers in Odisha for generations. Before a single thread meets the loom, both warp and weft yarns are resist-dyed in precise sections using tied bindings. When the weaving begins, these pre-dyed threads align to produce the Pasapali motif simultaneously on both sides of the fabric — a level of geometric accuracy that cannot be mechanically reproduced. Each GI certified Sambalpuri saree under this method takes 10 to 15 days on the loom for cotton. The rudraksha border and phula motifs in the pallu are worked into this same resist-dyed structure, making every element of the saree part of a single continuous craft act.
