Description
Malini is an original Sambalpuri cotton saree in white mercerized cotton, woven as a Sachipar in the authentic Sambalpuri handloom tradition by Bhulia weavers of Odisha. The all-white ground carries a danti check body, a chevron khajur border with ikat motifs, and a pallu alive with flower, fish, duck, deer, and elephant figures.
The Craft Behind Malini
Malini is woven through the Bandha double ikat process — the Bandhakala technique that defines GI certified Sambalpuri sarees. Before a single thread meets the loom, Bhulia weavers of Odisha tie and resist-dye both warp and weft threads in precise sequence so that motifs emerge simultaneously on both axes at the moment of weaving. There is no printing, no embroidery, no shortcut — only the alignment of pre-dyed threads across 10 to 15 days on the handloom. The danti checks on the body are woven using the jala technique, adding a structural rhythm distinct within the authentic Sambalpuri handloom tradition.
Wearing Malini
Mercerized cotton gives Malini a faint natural sheen without added weight. The fabric drapes with a gentle hold — firm enough to pleat crisply, light enough to move through a long day without fatigue. As a Sambalpuri saree for wedding ceremonies, the white ground reads with clarity beside richer colours. As a Sambalpuri saree for puja, the ikat elephant and fish on the pallu carry the quiet weight of craft made with intention. As a Sambalpuri cotton saree for office, the danti body offers visual structure that reads as composed rather than decorative. The khajur border frames the wearer's edge with a chevron line that is precise yet unhurried — a detail the eye returns to.
Malini is part of the Pasapali collection of handloom Sambalpuri sarees, each carrying the Government of India Handloom Mark and the Sambalpuri Handloom GI tag.
