Lopamudra is an original Sambalpuri cotton saree woven in deep maroon and black mercerized cotton, carrying diamond butas, geometric ikat patterns across the body, and a broad chevron-motif border — a handloom Sambalpuri saree built on the precision of the Bandhakala process.
The Craft Behind Lopamudra
Lopamudra is made using the Bandha technique — a double ikat process in which both warp and weft threads are resist-dyed and bound before weaving begins. This is the Bandhakala process: each thread is measured, tied, and dyed in calculated sequence so that when the loom draws them together, the motifs emerge simultaneously on both axes with no margin for error. The Bhulia weavers of Odisha have practised this for generations, working on a single cotton saree for 10 to 15 days. Lopamudra carries the GI certified Sambalpuri saree mark and the Government of India Handloom Mark, confirming its provenance as an authentic Sambalpuri handloom saree.
Wearing Lopamudra
Mercerized cotton carries a faint surface sheen without adding weight. Lopamudra drapes with a firm, clean fall — the kind that holds a pleat well through a long day without clinging. The maroon ground deepens in natural light; the black chevron border draws the eye along the hem. As a Sambalpuri saree for wedding occasions, the geometric ikat body reads as composed and considered. As a Sambalpuri saree for puja, the deep maroon carries traditional weight. As a Sambalpuri cotton saree for office, it moves without restriction and breathes through extended wear. The diamond butas sit at intervals across the body, giving the wearer a motif that is present but not insistent.
Lopamudra is part of the Pasapali collection of ikat saree Odisha weavers craft through the Bandha saree Odisha tradition — where every thread placed is a thread accounted for.
