Description

Kamal is an original Sambalpuri cotton saree woven in deep black mercerized cotton with maroon accents — a handloom Sambalpuri saree where lotus, fish, Rudraksha and phula motifs emerge from the fabric through the precision of Bandha weaving. The mercerized finish gives the cloth a quiet, even sheen without altering its handloom character.

The Craft Behind Kamal

Kamal is woven using the Bandha technique — a double ikat process known in Odisha as Bandhakala. In this method, both the warp and weft threads are resist-dyed in precise sections before a single pass of weaving begins. The dye is blocked by tightly bound ties, so when the threads are finally placed on the loom, their colours align to form motifs simultaneously across both axes of the cloth. This demands absolute accuracy: any shift in thread position breaks the pattern. Bhulia weavers of Odisha have practised this discipline across generations. Each Kamal saree takes 10 to 15 days on the loom to complete. It carries the GI certified Sambalpuri saree tag and the Government of India Handloom Mark, confirming its origin and hand-weaving.

Wearing Kamal

Mercerized cotton drapes with a composed weight — it does not cling or stiffen. Kamal holds its fold, moves cleanly with the body and remains cool across long hours of wear. The black ground holds the maroon border geometry and the lotus and fish motifs of the body with clarity, making it a considered choice as a Sambalpuri saree for wedding ceremonies where restraint carries more weight than ornament. The Rudraksha and phula border holds equal presence at a Sambalpuri saree for puja, where motif meaning is recognised. For daily formal contexts, Kamal works as a Sambalpuri cotton saree for office — the mercerized finish reads as polished without effort, and the cotton breathes through the day. The Padma pallu completes the drape with a motif that has moved through Odishan textile tradition for centuries.

Kamal is part of Pasapali's collection of authentic Sambalpuri handloom sarees — each recorded by weaver, technique and origin.
