Description

The Bichitrapuri is an original Sambalpuri cotton saree woven in mercerized cotton, carrying the handloom Sambalpuri saree tradition through its vintage saktapar check body, fish motif border, and traditional phula pallu in deep green and black. Every inch of this fabric holds a decision made before the loom was touched.

The Craft Behind Bichitrapuri

This GI certified Sambalpuri saree is produced through the Bandha double ikat technique, a process local weavers call Bandhakala. Before a single thread is woven, Bhulia weavers of Odisha calculate the exact placement of every motif — then bind and resist-dye the warp and weft threads separately so that the pattern emerges simultaneously from both directions when the cloth is finally woven. This demands that every thread be dyed to a precise position. The fish motif border and phula pallu of the Bichitrapuri are not printed or embroidered; they are locked into the structure of the cloth itself. On mercerized cotton, this process runs 10 to 15 days on the loom. The result is an authentic Sambalpuri handloom saree where motif alignment across warp and weft is the measure of the weaver's skill.

Wearing Bichitrapuri

Mercerized cotton carries a natural sheen without added weight. The Bichitrapuri drapes with a clean fall, holds a pleat well, and breathes through long wear — which is why this cloth moves comfortably from a Sambalpuri saree for puja morning to a Sambalpuri cotton saree for office without feeling out of place in either setting. The vintage saktapar check body has a quiet geometry that reads as considered rather than ornate, while the fish motif border gives each pleat a defined frame. As a Sambalpuri saree for wedding occasions it holds its own alongside heavier silks, worn by those who value the craft behind the cloth over the weight of it. The green and black palette is direct and grounded.

Pasapali documents each Bichitrapuri as an ikat saree from Odisha, woven within the GI certified Sambalpuri handloom tradition by Bhulia weavers whose craft record spans generations.
