Nityarekha is an original Sambalpuri cotton saree woven in mercerized cotton, part of Pasapali's handloom Sambalpuri saree line, presenting light blue and rust in measured contrast across a field of diamond-shaped geometrical patterns that hold their structure through every fold of the drape.
The Craft Behind Nityarekha
Nityarekha is woven through the Bandha (double ikat) technique, a process central to authentic Sambalpuri handloom in which both warp and weft threads are individually resist-dyed and bound before a single pass of the shuttle begins. This is the Bandhakala process — each thread tied, dyed, and aligned so that the diamond motifs on the body and the geometrical ikat patterns on the pallu emerge simultaneously from both axes of the cloth. The Bhulia weavers of Odisha, who carry this knowledge across generations, spend 10 to 15 days on the loom for a single mercerized cotton piece. Nityarekha carries the GI certified Sambalpuri saree mark, confirming its origin and the integrity of its weave.
Wearing Nityarekha
Mercerized cotton carries a mild sheen without weight, and Nityarekha drapes with a quiet ease — firm enough to hold pleats through a long day, soft enough against the skin that it settles without stiffness. The light blue ground keeps the rust border and Rudraksha motifs in steady relief rather than competition. As a Sambalpuri saree for wedding occasions, the double border commands attention without ornamentation; as a Sambalpuri saree for puja, the Rudraksha motif carries its own significance in the weave itself; as a Sambalpuri cotton saree for office wear, the diamond body and measured palette read as composed and considered. The wearer carries the geometry quietly.
Nityarekha is woven by Pasapali in the Sambalpuri handloom tradition — an ikat saree from Odisha made for those who read cloth carefully.
