Mohini is an original Sambalpuri cotton saree woven in deep blue and black mercerized cotton — an authentic Sambalpuri handloom saree carrying tribal and floral motifs across its body, with Laxmi yantra, Laxmi pada, and flower patterns flowering through the pallu.

The Craft Behind Mohini

Mohini is woven using Bandha, the double ikat technique, a process known as Bandhakala in which both warp and weft threads are individually resist-dyed by tying before they are set on the loom. This means every motif — the tribal forms, the florals, the Laxmi symbols — is built into the thread itself, not printed or embroidered on afterward. When weaving begins, the dyed threads align so the pattern emerges simultaneously on both axes. Bhulia weavers of Odisha carry this knowledge across generations. A single Mohini saree requires 10 to 15 days on the loom, a duration that reflects the precision Bandhakala demands. Mohini carries the GI certified Sambalpuri saree mark and the Government of India Handloom Mark, confirming its origin and authenticity.

Wearing Mohini

Mercerized cotton gives Mohini a quiet sheen and a drape that holds structure without weight. The fabric falls smoothly, breathes well, and does not stiffen with wear — qualities that make it steady across long hours. The deep blue ground and black border carry enough formality for a Sambalpuri saree for wedding occasions, while the Laxmi yantra and pada motifs on the pallu make it a considered choice as a Sambalpuri saree for puja. The clean geometric border of stripes and ikat patterns reads crisply in professional settings, making Mohini a grounded Sambalpuri cotton saree for office wear. The tribal and floral body motifs sit close to the wearer throughout the drape, never becoming decorative noise.

Mohini is part of Pasapali's handloom Sambalpuri saree collection, sourced directly from Bhulia weaver communities in Odisha.
