Draupadi is a handloom Sambalpuri cotton saree from Pasapali, woven as an original Sambalpuri cotton saree in deep blue and teal, carrying flower motifs across the body, a flower-and-kumbha border, and a restrained ikat-stripe pallu that draws the eye without overpowering the drape.

The Craft Behind Draupadi

Draupadi is made through the Bandhakala process — the defining discipline of Bandha, a double ikat technique practised by Bhulia weavers of Odisha. Before a single thread crosses the loom, both the warp and weft yarns are individually resist-tied and dyed so that each motif is locked into the thread itself. When weaving begins, those pre-dyed threads must meet with exact precision: the flower forms only when the correct warp thread crosses the correct weft thread at the correct moment. This alignment is not mechanical — it is held in the weaver's memory and hands across 10 to 15 days on the loom for a mercerized cotton length. Every saree produced this way is an authentic Sambalpuri handloom and carries the GI certified Sambalpuri saree designation under the Geographical Indications of Goods Act.

Wearing Draupadi

Mercerized cotton carries a mild sheen without the weight of silk, and Draupadi moves accordingly — it folds cleanly, holds a pleat without stiffness, and settles against the body with a quiet ease that improves through the day. The blue-to-teal shift in the field gives the flower motifs a sense of depth that changes with the light. As a Sambalpuri saree for wedding occasions, the kumbha border carries enough ceremonial resonance to read well in natural or hall light. As a Sambalpuri saree for puja, the restrained palette and ikat-stripe pallu suit a composed, considered presentation. As a Sambalpuri cotton saree for office wear, the mercerized finish and subdued motif placement make it fully practical for a long working day. The wearer, whatever the setting, carries a piece of Odishan craft tradition that took two weeks to build around her.

Draupadi is part of the Pasapali collection of handloom Sambalpuri sarees, sourced directly from Bhulia weaving families in Odisha.
