Damayanti is an original Sambalpuri cotton saree woven in mercerized cotton, part of Pasapali's handloom Sambalpuri saree collection where every thread is placed with intent. Pink runs through the body with phula buta and diamond butas, anchored by a Rudraksha motif border in blue and red, and a pallu carrying ikat flower motifs.
The Craft Behind Damayanti
Damayanti is woven by Bhulia weavers of Odisha using the Bandha technique — a double ikat process known as Bandhakala in which both warp and weft threads are individually resist-dyed before a single pass of weaving begins. Each thread bundle is measured, tied, and dyed in precise sequence so that the motifs — the Rudraksha forms on the border, the phula butas across the body — emerge in alignment only when warp meets weft on the loom. There is no correcting placement after weaving starts. A GI certified Sambalpuri saree of this count requires 10 to 15 days on the loom for cotton, and the thread count of 120 warp by 120 weft ensures the surface holds both clarity of motif and softness of hand. This is authentic Sambalpuri handloom work with no mechanical assist in the ikat dyeing.
Wearing Damayanti
Mercerized cotton at this thread count drapes with a quiet weight — it moves without pulling and settles into pleats without stiffening. The surface carries a mild sheen from the mercerization, which makes the pink ground catch light without appearing heavy. The phula buta and diamond butas across the body create a rhythm that reads well both up close and at distance, which suits a Sambalpuri saree for wedding ceremonies where the wearer is seen from across a hall. The Rudraksha border grounds the drape for a Sambalpuri saree for puja, carrying a motif that holds devotional significance in Odishan textile tradition. For a Sambalpuri cotton saree for office wear, the weight and the restrained palette make Damayanti practical across a full day without effort. The ikat flower motifs on the pallu remain the focal point however the saree is draped.
Damayanti is part of Pasapali's ongoing work to document and distribute authentic Sambalpuri handloom sarees directly from the Bhulia weaving community of Odisha.
