Chitrangada is an original Sambalpuri cotton saree woven in mercerized cotton, rendered in grey and black through the authentic Sambalpuri handloom tradition. The body carries tribal motifs, the border traces the fish pattern, and the pallu opens into phula chakra — each element resolved through the precision of the Bandha process, not printed or applied after weaving.
The Craft Behind Chitrangada
Chitrangada is woven using the Bandha technique, a form of double ikat practised by Bhulia weavers of Odisha. In the Bandhakala process, both the warp and weft threads are individually resist-dyed through careful tying and dyeing before a single pass of the shuttle begins. This means every motif — the fish on the border, the phula chakra in the pallu, the tribal forms across the body — must be calculated and dyed into the thread before weaving commences. When the threads finally meet on the loom, the motifs emerge in alignment on both faces of the cloth simultaneously. A single cotton saree of this construction takes 10 to 15 days on the loom. Chitrangada carries the GI certified Sambalpuri saree mark and the Government of India Handloom Mark, confirming its origin and craft integrity.
Wearing Chitrangada
Mercerized cotton carries a quiet sheen that distinguishes it from standard cotton — the fibre is treated to increase lustre and tensile strength without altering its breathability. In Chitrangada, this translates to a saree that drapes with gentle body, holds a pleat cleanly, and moves without stiffness through a full day. The grey ground keeps the tribal motifs visible without demanding attention, making it a considered choice as a Sambalpuri cotton saree for office wear. The fish border and phula chakra pallu bring enough craft presence for it to read well as a Sambalpuri saree for puja. In heavier draping styles, with the right blouse and jewellery, Chitrangada also works as a Sambalpuri saree for wedding occasions where restraint is preferred over ornament.
Chitrangada is part of Pasapali's ongoing documentation of the handloom Sambalpuri saree as a living, wearable craft form.
