Vasundhara is a handloom Sambalpuri cotton saree and an authentic Sambalpuri handloom saree woven in mercerized cotton, carrying traditional flower motifs across its deep purple body, a fish motif border, and a black pallu dense with phula lata vines. The mercerized finish gives the cotton a quiet sheen without altering its handloom character.
The Craft Behind Vasundhara
Vasundhara is produced through the Bandha technique — a double ikat process known in Odisha as Bandhakala. Before a single thread meets the loom, Bhulia weavers of Odisha resist-dye both warp and weft threads in precise sequences, binding sections with tight ties so that dye penetrates only where intended. When the threads are finally woven together, the motifs — flower forms on the body, fish along the border, phula lata across the pallu — emerge in alignment across both axes simultaneously. This level of motif registration demands exacting calculation and takes 10 to 15 days on the loom for cotton. Vasundhara carries the GI certified Sambalpuri saree mark, confirming its origin and craft integrity under the Sambalpuri Handloom GI tag. Every Pasapali saree also holds the Government of India Handloom Mark.
Wearing Vasundhara
Mercerized cotton drapes with a moderate body — structured enough to hold pleats cleanly, light enough to move without resistance through a full day. The fabric breathes well and softens further with each wash, settling into the wearer over time. The purple body with traditional flower motifs reads with presence at a Sambalpuri saree for wedding gathering, while the measured weight and cool hand make it equally suited as a Sambalpuri cotton saree for office wear. The black pallu with phula lata motifs anchors the drape visually, offering a considered finish for a Sambalpuri saree for puja. The fish border frames the hem without dominating — a detail that rewards close attention.
Vasundhara is part of the Pasapali collection of original Sambalpuri cotton sarees, each sourced directly from Bhulia weavers of Odisha.
