Smritirekha is an original Sambalpuri cotton saree woven in mercerized cotton, part of the authentic Sambalpuri handloom tradition. Its light blue ground carries shankha, Lakshmi yantra, and Lakshmi pada across the body, while a golden-black striped border and a pallu detailed with flower and fish motifs complete the composition with measured intention.

The Craft Behind Smritirekha

Smritirekha is woven using the Bandha technique — a double ikat process known in Odisha as Bandhakala. Before a single thread passes through the loom, both warp and weft threads are individually bound and resist-dyed so that each motif forms simultaneously from two directions as weaving begins. This precise alignment of colour across intersecting threads is what defines a GI certified Sambalpuri saree and separates it from any printed or single-ikat fabric. The Bhulia weavers of Odisha, who hold this knowledge across generations, spend between 10 and 15 days on the loom to complete a single cotton Bandha saree. Every shankha, every Lakshmi yantra visible in Smritirekha is the result of that pre-loom calculation, not embellishment applied after weaving.

Wearing Smritirekha

Mercerized cotton carries a quiet sheen and a firmness that holds a pleat cleanly without stiffness. Smritirekha drapes with a slight structure — enough weight to fall evenly, light enough to stay comfortable through long hours. The Lakshmi pada and Lakshmi yantra woven into the body make this a considered choice as a Sambalpuri saree for puja, where the motifs carry their own meaning in ritual context. The precision of the Bandha weave and the formal gold-black border make it equally suited as a Sambalpuri saree for wedding functions, worn by those who prefer craft over embellishment. Its breathability and clean drape also make Smritirekha a practical Sambalpuri cotton saree for office wear, where the handloom texture reads as considered rather than decorative. The fish and flower motifs on the pallu rest at the shoulder — present without competing for attention.

Smritirekha is part of the Pasapali collection of handloom Sambalpuri sarees, sourced directly from Bhulia weavers in Odisha.
