Neelmayi is an original Sambalpuri cotton saree woven in deep blue mercerized cotton, carrying the peacock, Rudraksha, and jhoti phula motifs across its body, border, and pallu — a handloom Sambalpuri saree where every thread has been placed with intention.

The Craft Behind Neelmayi

Neelmayi is made using the Bandha technique — a double ikat process known in Odisha as Bandhakala. Before a single thread is placed on the loom, the warp and weft threads are separately resist-dyed by tying sections tightly to block colour. When the weaving begins, the pre-dyed threads align to produce motifs simultaneously on both axes — a level of precision that cannot be replicated by machine. This is the work of Bhulia weavers, Odisha, who carry this knowledge across generations. A cotton Bandha saree of this thread count — warp 120, weft 120 — takes 10 to 15 days to complete on the handloom. Neelmayi is a GI certified Sambalpuri saree, and carries the Government of India Handloom Mark as confirmation of its origin and craft authenticity.

Wearing Neelmayi

Mercerized cotton at this thread count has a quiet weight to it — firm enough to hold the drape cleanly, light enough to remain comfortable through long wear. The surface carries a mild natural sheen from the mercerization process, which also deepens the blue and green tones. The mayur motif on the body settles at the chest and lower drape when worn in the Nivi style, and the Rudraksha border frames the edge with steady geometric rhythm. Neelmayi is a considered choice as a Sambalpuri saree for wedding functions, where its structured drape holds through the occasion. The measured palette and fine weave also make it suitable as a Sambalpuri saree for puja, and its clean textile character works equally well as a Sambalpuri cotton saree for office wear.

Neelmayi is part of the Pasapali collection of authentic Sambalpuri handloom sarees, sourced directly from Bhulia weaver families in Odisha.
