Mangala is an original Sambalpuri cotton saree woven in mercerized cotton, part of Pasapali's handloom Sambalpuri saree collection — a pink and green Bandha weave carrying diamond-shaped geometric body patterns, a Rudraksha motif border, and a pallu detailed with fish and flower motifs drawn directly from the Odishan craft tradition.
The Craft Behind Mangala
Mangala is shaped by the Bandhakala process — the resist-dyeing method at the heart of authentic Sambalpuri handloom. Before a single thread enters the loom, both warp and weft yarns are bound and dyed in deliberate sequence so that each motif — the Rudraksha, the fish, the diamond — emerges simultaneously across both axes of the cloth as it is woven. This is Bandha, the double ikat technique, and it demands extraordinary precision: a misaligned bundle produces a misaligned motif with no remedy. Bhulia weavers of Odisha carry this knowledge across generations. A GI certified Sambalpuri saree such as Mangala takes 10 to 15 days on the loom in cotton, each day a continuation of a calculation that began long before weaving.
Wearing Mangala
Mercerized cotton carries a quiet sheen without weight. Mangala drapes with a firm, settled hand that holds pleats through hours of wear and softens gradually at the body with movement. The weave weight makes it well-suited as a Sambalpuri saree for office — structured, breathable, and composed without effort. The fish and flower pallu rises naturally over the shoulder, and the Rudraksha border grounds the drape at its edge. For a Sambalpuri saree for puja, the pink and green palette draws on colours that carry significance in Odishan ritual. For a Sambalpuri saree for wedding, the Bandha geometry across the body offers visual richness without surface embellishment. Mangala is a saree that works with the wearer's presence rather than against it.
Mangala is part of Pasapali's continuing work with Bhulia weavers to document and make available authentic Sambalpuri handloom sarees for those who seek the original craft.
