Charulata is an original Sambalpuri cotton saree woven in deep blue mercerized cotton, carrying lotus and peacock motifs across the body, a Rudraksha border, and a Jhoti-patterned pallu in a contrasting red — a handloom Sambalpuri saree grounded in the living Bandhakala tradition of Odisha.
The Craft Behind Charulata
Charulata is woven using the Bandha technique — a double ikat process known as Bandhakala, practised exclusively by Bhulia weavers in Odisha. Before a single thread meets the loom, both warp and weft yarns are resist-dyed in precise sections, so that motifs emerge simultaneously from both directions during weaving. This demands exact alignment: every lotus petal, every peacock outline, and every Rudraksha bead locks into position only because the resist-tying was mapped correctly weeks earlier. A single cotton Bandha saree takes 10 to 15 days on the loom. Charulata carries the GI certified Sambalpuri saree mark and the Government of India Handloom Mark, confirming its origin and craft authenticity within the authentic Sambalpuri handloom tradition.
Wearing Charulata
Mercerized cotton gives Charulata a subtle sheen without weight. The fabric drapes with a clean, controlled fall — it holds a pleat firmly and moves without pulling. At 5.40 metres and 43 inches breadth, the saree wraps with ease, and the thread count of 120 warp by 120 weft produces a surface that is smooth against the skin across long hours of wear. The Rudraksha border gives the drape a grounded, structured edge, making it a considered choice as a Sambalpuri saree for puja or temple occasions. The peacock and lotus motifs across the body carry enough visual presence for a Sambalpuri saree for wedding gatherings without heaviness. The light, breathable hand of the cotton also makes Charulata a practical Sambalpuri cotton saree for office wear through the day. The wearer carries the full vocabulary of Odishan craft with no effort.
